Cookie Policy

(Note: This section provides a summary of our cookie usage. Detailed information about cookies can also be found in our Privacy Policy. We include this section for clarity and to assist users in managing their cookie preferences.)

What Are Cookies?

Cookies are small text files that are placed on your device (computer, tablet, smartphone) when you visit a website. They are widely used to make websites work efficiently, as well as to provide information to the owners of the site. Cookies can serve various purposes: enabling core site functionality, remembering preferences, analyzing site usage, and more.

How Xplainity Uses Cookies:

Xplainity uses cookies and similar technologies to enhance your experience and gather insights into how our platform is used. Specifically, we use:

  • Essential Cookies: These cookies are necessary for the website and Service to function properly. For example, they enable you to log in, stay logged in as you navigate through different pages, and access secure areas (like your dashboard or class content). Without these cookies, certain services you have asked for (such as logging into your account or submitting an assignment) cannot be provided.
  • Preference Cookies: These cookies allow our site to remember choices you make and provide more personal features. For instance, if Xplainity offers a language selection or remembers your preferred layout, a cookie will store that preference so you don’t have to set it every time. Similarly, if you mute a tutorial or pop-up once, a cookie might remember that you dismissed it so it doesn’t show again.
  • Analytics Cookies: We use analytics tools (like Google Analytics or similar) that set cookies to collect information about how visitors use our site. This includes data like which pages users visit, how long they stay, how they got to our site (e.g., via a search engine or link), and any errors encountered. The information gathered is generally aggregated and does not directly identify individual visitors. We use these analytics cookies to understand usage patterns, to optimize our content and navigation, and to measure the performance of certain features or campaigns. For example, an analytics cookie might tell us that 50% of our users visit a certain feature but only stay for 10 seconds, indicating a potential usability issue.
  • No Advertising Cookies (at this time): Xplainity does not use third-party advertising or targeting cookies as of the latest update. We do not show third-party ads on our platform and thus do not track you for advertising purposes across other sites. In the event that we ever consider adding advertising-supported content, we would update this Cookie Policy and ensure that such cookies are only used with proper consent and transparency.

Third-Party Cookies:

The cookies set by Xplainity itself are called “first-party cookies”. In some cases, we might use external tools that set their own cookies – these are “third-party cookies”. For example:

  • If we embed a video from YouTube or a widget from a third-party service in a lesson, those third parties might set cookies (for instance, YouTube could set cookies to track video views or remember your volume preference on the video player). We generally try to minimize third-party embeds, but when we do use them, we will try to use privacy-enhanced modes (like YouTube’s privacy mode) or clearly inform you.
  • Our analytics provider sets cookies to perform its analysis (e.g., _ga cookie for Google Analytics). We configure these analytics cookies where possible to anonymize IP addresses and avoid collecting more data than needed.

We ensure that any third-party cookie usage is in line with our Privacy Policy and that no third-party can use cookies via our site to collect personal data for their own purposes without your consent.

Your Choices and Managing Cookies:

You have the right to decide whether to accept or reject cookies (aside from strictly necessary ones). Here are ways you can manage cookies:

  • Cookie Consent Banner: If you are in a jurisdiction like the EU/EEA or UK (or other locations where showing a cookie consent is required by law or best practice), you will see a cookie consent banner when you first visit our site. This banner allows you to accept all cookies or reject non-essential cookies. By clicking “Accept All”, you agree to all categories of cookies. If you click “Reject” or “Manage Preferences”, you can typically choose to disable analytics cookies while keeping essential ones active. (Essential cookies are always on, as the site won’t function without them.)
  • Browser Settings: Most web browsers let you control cookies through their settings preferences. You can set your browser to refuse cookies or delete specific cookies. Be aware that if you disable all cookies, our site may not function properly (for instance, you may not be able to log in or use interactive features). Here are links to cookie management instructions for popular browsers:
  • Do Not Track: Some browsers have a “Do Not Track” feature that tells websites you do not want to be tracked. Our site currently does not respond differently to DNT signals (since we do not engage in cross-site tracking or advertising). However, because we only use cookies for the purposes described, your browsing on Xplainity should not be significantly impacted by DNT.
  • Opt-Out of Analytics: If we use Google Analytics, you have the option to install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on which prevents Google Analytics from collecting data on your visits to websites that use GA. We also honor any built-in cookie consent choices – if you decline analytics cookies via our banner, our site will not load Google Analytics for you.

Cookie Duration:

The length of time a cookie stays on your device varies:

  • Session cookies: These are temporary cookies that last only for the duration of your session (until you close your browser). For example, the cookie that keeps you logged in is usually a session cookie – once you log out or close the browser, it’s deleted.
  • Persistent cookies: These remain on your device for a set period or until you delete them. We use persistent cookies mostly for remembering preferences (maybe a few days or weeks) or for analytics (Google Analytics cookies can last from 24 hours up to 2 years, but we might configure them with shorter lifespans). We try to set reasonable durations – not too long, unless needed (like a cookie to remember that you already saw the cookie banner might last a year so it doesn’t keep popping up).

Changes to our Cookie Use:

If we make significant changes to the cookies we use or the purposes for which we use them, we will update this Cookie Policy and, if required, re-prompt for consent.
